Project 'exchanging the watertanks'
During our inspection of the boat, we noticed that the water tanks had been 'fixed' with fiberglass. It seems someone believed applying fiberglass to stainless steel would effectively seal a leak. Unfortunately, we discovered that this repair was ineffective, prompting us to consider the best way to address the leaking tank. Initially, we decided to disconnect the leaking tank for our passage from the UK to the Netherlands and postpone a permanent solution.
Upon arriving in the Netherlands and evaluating our options, we concluded that since we intend to install a watermaker and ensure the water from the tanks is safe to drink, replacing the tanks would be the best course of action. This would guarantee that they are in excellent condition and suitable for drinking. Additionally, we plan to replace all the water hoses to ensure we can safely access potable water.
For now, our primary focus is on the new water tanks. We decided to retain the existing design, as it was well thought out. We took measurements of the current tanks and added an outlet for a water level sensor, as there was previously no way to monitor water levels within the tanks. We then provided our sketch to a friend who welded the two new tanks for us. Just a few weeks later, we successfully replaced the old tanks with the new ones. The process went smoothly; we applied Sikaflex to the support points to prevent movement during heeling and subsequently connected all the new pipes.
