ship’s log 9: first sail with the new sails!
At first, we really hoped we could keep the sails that came with the boat. But once we took a closer look, reality quickly caught up with us. The genoa was in poor condition, and we soon discovered that the mainsail had originally been designed for a boat with a rolling mast. This meant that the mainsail was extremely floppy and had completely the wrong geometry. No matter how much we tried, there was simply no way to trim it into a proper shape or achieve a good sail profile. It became clear that new sails weren’t just a nice upgrade — they were absolutely necessary.
Since Reto’s father has had such great experiences with Elvstrøm Sails, we started looking for dealers in the area where our boat would be staying for the near future anyway. This turned out to be the perfect solution because it allowed a professional sailmaker to come on board, take precise measurements, and guide us through choosing the right sail wardrobe for our big sailing plans.
When we bought the boat, we also realized that it was equipped with a rather old rolling boom. While it’s undeniably cool and full of character, it also makes fitting a new mainsail a bit more challenging. If you’re curious about the entire process of replacing the old boom and what that involved, you can read more about it here.
